Tango Skitsofrenia - Sielun Veljet from Hei Soturit

Sielun Veljet doing what they do the best. Tango Skitsofrenia rocks all around. The heavy riff in a tango-like rhythm, the roaring bass and the drums that could shatter stone. Try combining Killing Joke’s heavy funk and the Birthday Party’s manic thrasing and you’d come up with something similar to Tango Skitsofrenia.

Hei Soturit as an album is almost a forgotten Finnish post-punk gem which doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Yes, Killing Joke’s new album MMXII is a success!

MMXII is a lot different than Absolute Dissent, which was very raw, very fierce and very angry. This record is a lot more harmonious, almost like an updated version of Night Time, whereas Absolute Dissent sounded a lot like their eponymous debut. Sure, there are the tracks with all the rage in the world concentrated into three or five minutes, which Killing Joke is the most famous for. Tracks like Colony Collapse and Rapture rage on like no tomorrow and the other Killing Joke trademarks are present as well, like the world’s end funk á la Trance. But tracks like Polar Shift, Primobile, On All Hallow’s Eve and especially in Cythera stand out. They have this quite peculiar and mystical, Joy Divisionish feel to them. I like it very much.

I know it’s unfair to compare this album to Absolute Dissent, but it is impossible not to do so. The album is terrific, but I’m not saying that MMXII is better than Absolute Dissent. But it is a good album none the less. Definitely worth a listen! Just don’t expect all that much fire and brimstone and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

PS: I just need to mention, that In Cythera reminds me of one of my favourite games of all time, Ambrosia Software’s Cythera, which was this quite primitive, yet so inspiring RPG for Macs. I used to play it to death when I was ten or eleven years old.

Ahh, good old times.
